Position Description
Position Title: Executive Pastor

Accountability: Board of Elders, Church Council, Congregation

Position Summary: The Executive Pastor will direct the ministry and give visionary leadership to the church and pastoral staff in order to assist Buffalo Covenant to embrace continued spiritual growth and maturity through worship, Bible study, evangelism, discipleship, fellowship, and service.

Qualifications:

The Executive Pastor:
1. Shall be a person of strong Christian faith and character whose life style reflects 1 Timothy 3:1-7. Must have a vital spiritual life, growing in their relationship with God, with Buffalo Covenant Church, and with the Evangelical Covenant Church at the district, conference, and national levels.

2. Shall have a Master’s degree in divinity, or a related field, along with experience that gives evidence of ability to effectively fulfill the role as Executive Pastor. Shall also have a passion to motivate, train and release others to effectively fulfill their roles as well.

3. Shall have gifts and abilities in leadership, administration, shepherding and preaching.

4. Shall be able to work well with others, relate and communicate one-on-one and in small groups, as well as in larger group settings.

Responsibilities:

The primary responsibilities of the Executive Pastor are to meet the spiritual needs of the congregation by:

1. Developing visionary congregational direction in cooperation with Preaching Pastor and Board of Elders.

2. Providing direction to ministerial staff.

3. Developing and exercising spiritual gifts as directed by the Holy Spirit.

4. Providing oversight of the church’s financial planning and budgeting, maintaining fiscally sound budgets and financial activities, as well as establishing appropriate policies and procedures.

5. Performing selected Pastoral functions such as funerals, weddings, visitation, etc.


6. Preparing sermon/teaching presentations, being ready to fill the pulpit when the Preaching Pastor is not present.

Expectations:

The Executive Pastor:
1. Shall work with the Elder Board as well as the ministry staff in planning and leading this congregation to more effective ministry for Jesus’ sake and promoting the unity, excellence and growth of Buffalo Covenant Church.

2. Shall fill the pulpit in the absence of the Preaching Pastor.

3. Shall lead staff meetings, attend Elder Board meetings, and participate in council meetings as well as other meetings associated with church leadership and direction issues.

4. Shall attend seminars, workshops, and other learning experiences that pertain to specific responsibilities or to the continued development of the whole ministering person. These opportunities are to be accepted upon the approval of the Board of Elders.

5. Shall be available for speaking, leading, consulting, and encouraging outside of Buffalo Covenant Church. These opportunities are also to be accepted upon the approval of the Board of Elders.

6. Shall be ordained or willing to work toward ordination in the Evangelical Covenant Church.

7. Shall represent our church to the community and the denomination.
