Job Description for Student Ministry Pastor
Seneca Creek, a 21 year old non-denominational church of 700 members with a passion to ignite a movement of the gospel that will transform the world with the hope of Christ, is currently searching for an exceptional, full-time student ministry pastor. We serve a multi-cultural community in the fast-paced suburbs of Washington DC.
We are an externally focused church shifting gears into a missional congregation. While our theology is orthodox, our methods are not. We are a church without walls, and believe that innovation and failure form the bridge to the future.
Candidates must be engaging, confident, culturally relevant, able to effectively reach out to a multi-cultural congregation. Must be comfortable with the freedom to fail, independent, handle significant breathing room; must possess ability to see potential in students and challenge them to reach that potential.
The Student Ministry is not a youth group, and is ministry-driven, not program-driven. Our pastor will help youth create and initiate ministries, not function as a babysitter. Candidates must have appropriate years of experience to drive a ministry; developing student leadership potential must be a major focus. Continually challenging students to grow is key to this ministry. Ministry is student-led with strong volunteer support; candidates must be relationally wired to connect regularly, personally, meaningfully with students/volunteers. Must be strategic thinker, able to brand the ministry, define its path, ensuring all initiatives fit overall ministry strategy.
The pastor has wide latitude to innovate without being micromanaged; to try things that todays students will respond to. Ideal candidates will develop continuity and connection in student programs, developing leaders to oversee other student ministry teams.
We believe in holistic ministry; all ministry staff recognize and value the importance of being integrated in the overall vision of the church, and regularly and effectively participate on the ministry team. Ministry team members regularly engage in meetings and dialogue about overall church direction and function as bridge-builders to other ministries, both in and outside the church.
Must integrate both middle and high school ministries, eventually help us develop a college-age ministry, while overseeing multiple staff reproduced from effective disciple-making in middle and high-school ministries. We are committed to partnering between Childrens Ministry and Student Ministry, to increase our effectiveness in helping young people follow Jesus and impact their world for him.
Requirements:
• Must be culturally relevant and contextualize the gospel for todays post-modern culture.
• Ability to think outside of church circles to reach out to non-Christians; to think of/effectively implement new ways to reach the unchurched.
• Ability to see beyond internal student ministry to develop student/other volunteer leaders to take ministry out into the community.
• Strategic thinker able to hold the focus of the ministry to the desired path.
• Ability to delegate effectively to students/volunteer leaders to keep ministry moving toward established goals.
• Strong administrative skills, interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills.
Extremely desirable characteristics include:
• Culturally diverse candidates.
• Ability to effectively connect with multi-cultural congregation.
• Understanding of/experience with diverse congregation in an urban setting.
• Experience on a multi-cultural staff.
